• The Mattituck Fire Department and Mattituck Lions Club will jointly sponsor a blood and eyeglass drive at the Pike Street firehouse Saturday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Those between 16 (with parental permission) and 76 who weigh at least 110 pounds and have not received a tattoo in the last 12 months are eligible to donate blood. • Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead has announced the addition of Jenny Cabas-Vargas, M.D., to its orthopedics team. A specialist in arthritis and autoimmune conditions, Dr. Cabas-Vargas will serve the hospital as director of rheumatology and immunology.

• San Simeon by the Sound in Greenport has named C.N.A. Susan Stabile, a 10-year member of its recreation and nursing team, as employee of the month for March. In a release, co-workers said Ms. Stabile’s “bubbly and effervescent personality is integral to her role at San Simeon.” In describing her job responsibilities, Ms. Stabile said, “I try every day to brighten someone’s life.”

• Peconic Landing in Greenport has named Vincent Tirelli as its March employee of the month. In a release, director of environmental services Darryl Volinski said he has shown “leadership and commitment” and “goes above and beyond for Peconic Landing and our residents.”

Mr. Tirelli has “taken the lead during emergency situations,” Mr. Volinski said, and “exemplifies honesty and fairness with his staff as well as his peers.”

• The 23rd annual Eastern Long Island Hospital Golf Classic, honoring the life and legacy of the late John Romanelli, will take place Wednesday, May 15, at Gardiner’s Bay Country Club on Shelter Island. The event, which benefits the ELIH emergency department, features 18 holes of golf (with tee times at 8:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.), hole-in-one prizes, a barbecue lunch, grab-and-go sandwiches at halfway, cocktails, dinner and an awards ceremony. • ELIH physician assistant Christopher Edelstein recently earned a Certificate of Added Qualifications in hospital medicine from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. He acquired this specialty credential by meeting licensure, education and experience criteria and passing a related exam. Mr. Edelstein earned a similar credential in emergency medicine in 2011, making him one of only eight PAs nationwide to hold two CAQs from the organization.  (more…)

Steven Smyth, administrator at San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing, Rehabilitation and Adult Day Health Care in Greenport, has been named a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Administrators. • The January employee of the month at San Simeon by the Sound is Seth Tramontana of Greenport, a valued three-year member of the facility’s maintenance and housekeeping team. Mark Velazquez, director of plant operations, described Mr. Tramontana in a release as “a hard-working employee [who] can always be counted on.”

• A free session of Tai Chi with instructor Denise Gillies will take place Sunday, Jan. 18, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the schoolhouse annex of the town recreation center on Peconic Lane. Part of North Fork Reform Synagogue’s health and wellness series, the session will introduce the ancient Chinese practice, which can help reduce stress and improve balance, flexibility and mental focus. • Peconic Landing in Greenport has named Ellen Pawlowski, a cook in the dining services department, as employee of the month for January. In a release, dining services director William Bjornholm said, “In the short time she has been here she has really assimilated into the Peconic Landing culture [and] has become a ‘go to’ person in the kitchen.”

Ms. Pawlowski, he continued, “is another ‘behind the scenes’ gem, who works with dignity, focus and drive each day.”

Weekly Al-Anon meetings take place on the North Fork on the following schedule: Monday at 7 p.m. and Tuesday at noon at Cutchogue Presbyterian Church; Wednesday at 7 p.m. at First Universalist Church, Southold; and Thursday at 7 p.m. (open adult child meeting) at Church of the Redeemer, Mattituck.
