Send eight wrestlers into the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships and there’s a decent chance some good things are going to happen.

Four of the eight Mattituck/Greenport/Southold wrestlers who made it to Times Union Center in Albany on Friday secured a place in Saturday’s Division II semifinals. Then two of those four, seniors James Hoeg and Tanner Zagarino, went on to claim the first individual state championships in team history.

To put it all in perspective, as New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association executive director Robert Zayas did during the pre-finals ceremonies, over 20,000 young men wrestle in New York State. The top 30 were crowned Saturday night in the 55th annual NYSPHSAA Championships at Times Union Center in Albany.

Four Mattituck/Greenport/Southold wrestlers were among the finalists who paraded into the arena for the finals. Mattituck has never had a state champion wrestler before.

History beckoned.

The dominance over Division II teams in Suffolk County speaks for itself. The Mattituck/Greenport/Southold wrestling team has won 30 straight dual meets entering this season. The Tuckers had seven county champions last year and enter this season with a wrestler ranked top-two in 12 of the weight classes, according to preseason rankings by Long Island Wrestling Association. The lights were dimmed before the wrestlers in the finals of the 13th annual L. Robert “Doc” Fallot Section XI Division II Championships marched into the Center Moriches High School gym to applause from fans, who rose to their feet. Then, as they had done all day — and for four seasons, the Mattituck/Greenport/Southold wrestlers shined. READ

Louis Troisi’s name has been mentioned time and time again in Mattituck/Greenport/Southold wrestling circles. That’s because Troisi made a name for himself as the only Mattituck wrestler to have ever reached the state podium and earned all-state status. He did that in 2007 when he took third place at 130 pounds in Division II.

The current Tuckers are undoubtedly well aware of Troisi’s place in the program’s history. Coach Cory Dolson has often spoken about his desire to see more Tuckers become all-state wrestlers. That could become a reality by the end of this week. (more…)
