Bella Masotti had traffic in front of her by the time Claire Gatz handed the baton to her, but that didn’t last long.

Masotti had several runners in front of her. Like a rocket, the Mattituck High School freshman burst forward and passed them all within 55 meters, as if she was shot out of a cannon. READ

Alya Ayoub may have felt like jumping straight up in the air and yelling, “Whoopee!”

She didn’t, though. The Mattituck High School senior restrained herself, out of consideration for those long jumpers who had failed to qualify for the state track and field championships.

When it came to putting together a 4×100-meter relay team, eighth-grader Bella Masotti seemed like a natural fit with veterans Alya Ayoub, Amy Macaluso and Meg Dinizio. For one thing, Masotti brought one quality that cannot be coached or bought: pure speed.

“She’s a speedy Gonzalez,” Macaluso, a senior, said. “Meg and Alya and I have been on the team together for a while now, but Bella just kind of fit right in like a little sister.”

Mattituck runner Meg Dinizio 012217

Mattituck High School junior Meg Dinizio bolted to a third-place finish in the 55-meter dash in the Suffolk County League V girls winter track championships at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Saturday. Her time was 7.79 seconds. A teammate, eighth-grader Isabella Masotti, was sixth in 8.07.

Mattituck fielded an indoor track team for the first time last winter and the results were impressive. The Tuckers had four girls compete at the small school county championship meet. READ
