New York State is suing the Environmental Protection Agency for dumping dredged materials in Long Island Sound.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Thursday that the State of New York would be taking legal action against the EPA after it said in 2016 it would dump dredged materials into the eastern Sound.

Recently released financial disclosure reports for 2015 show that both state Senator Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) and Assemblyman Fred Thiele (I-Sag Harbor) have resigned from positions at Twomey, Latham Shea, Kelley, Dubin and Quartararo, the prominent Riverhead law firm where both previously worked.

A state mediator settling a contract dispute between Southold and the town’s civil service employee’s union has released a fact-finding report that suggests the salary increases the union is seeking would “make it difficult, if not impossible for the town to function.”

The report, which isn’t binding, also suggested employees contribute more to their health insurance policies, and that the town should institute an evaluation procedure.

The report also calls the union’s request that its president to be able to leave work for three hours each day for union business would be “excessive,” (more…)
