A bill in the New York State Legislature aims to create a marketing district for Long Island’s five East End Towns, as well as incorporated villages, that would generate revenue to advance regional tourism.
But municipalities would be allowed to opt out of the potential Peconic Region Tourism Marketing District, Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell said at Tuesday’s Town Board work session at Peconic Landing in Greenport.

The Southold Town Transportation Commission wants to address townwide parking problems.
The commission has encountered increasingly complex parking-related issues, chairman Neb Brashich said at Tuesday’s Town Board work session. These include a lack of signage directing visitors to municipal lots; cars that park in town lots for extended periods, making snow removal difficult; and cars lining narrow roads during events, according to a list of locations, issues and possible remedies the commission created.
Facing opposition from North Fork elected officials, the state parks department announced Tuesday it will withdraw a request for proposals for a Taste NY retail concession center that would have included alcohol sales at Hallock State Park Preserve in Northville.
Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell said Thursday he will propose legislation this year to encourage affordable housing development by allowing apartments in commercial properties.
During his annual “State of the Town” at Town Hall, Mr. Russell said he’s proposing to change town code to allow apartments as a primary use in commercial zones. Currently, apartments are only allowed as accessory uses above stores.
