Residents of South Harbor Road in Southold awoke to gunfire and a steep police presence Oct. 14 after three men were shot during what police called a gang-related midnight ambush, Southold police said. (more…)

In late June, the local wine industry suffered a significant blow when Castello di Borghese Vineyard & Winery owners Ann Marie and Marco Borghese of Cutchogue died within 10 days of each other. (more…)

Few stories from 2014 found their way into The Suffolk Times more often than the “dustup on the waterfront.” On the street, at Town Hall and in the letters section of this paper, New Suffolk residents regularly traded barbs with neighbors and business owners over plans for development along the bay. The news of a prominent Greenport business owner driving drunk — allegedly causing a crash that left a Peconic man dead — shocked the community weeks before 2014 came to an end. John Costello, 71, stands accused of driving drunk, swerving into oncoming traffic and striking another car, killing its passenger on Dec. 6. (more…)

Three men died in accidents along Long Island Sound this year — one while flying a plane he built himself, a second while spearfishing and a third who was alone in his sailboat.
