Southold Town Highway Superintendent Vincent Orlando isn’t sure when the huge snowblower with the chipped light blue paint and faded leather seats was purchased.

The highway department’s most veteran employee, he said, began working there 29 years ago. By then, the vintage 1946 truck with the motorized snowblower attachment had already been there a long time.  (more…)

It wasn’t a Smurf attempting to cross Route 48 in Cutchogue after all.

Southold Town was forced to pay out more than $7,000 to three drivers who had their vehicles damaged after a bucket of blue paint spilled off a town highway department truck on July 1 and splattered onto the road in Cutchogue, records show. (more…)

In seeking to purchase two new trucks the for Southold Town highway department’s fleet, Superintendent Vincent Orlando is essentially doing what he told voters he would when he ran for the position in last year’s elections. He’s aiming to “rotate the fleet,” replacing outdated equipment that’s in need of costly repairs with more modern and efficient vehicles.  (more…)

In the market for a 54-inch mooring buoy? The Southold Highway Department has one for sale.

The hollow, steel mooring buoy, which looks remarkably similar to a wrecking ball, is usually attached to the anchor of large ships or barges for use in deep water. (more…)

The cold, snowy winter — followed in recent days by some warm weather — is turning Southold Town’s roadways into a “war zone” with potholes popping up left and right, according to Highway Superintendent Vincent Orlando. (more…)

With snowfall totals soaring this winter season — and another storm on the way — area highway crews have been coating the roads with mixtures of salt and sand, but those mixtures are only so effective once temperatures dip below 20 degrees, according to town highway superintendents.  (more…)
