Greenport

What glorious weather we’re now having. I was down in Florida and aghast when I saw the video of all the rain we got here. Let’s hope the sunshine stays!

Tim Morey (Greenport High School Class of ’69) is putting together a book on Coach Dorrie Jackson. He’d like contributions from anyone who has a story to share about him. Your contribution should be no more than one page long, either handwritten or typed, and should include one specific memory of Coach Jackson, whether it involves playing for him on the Greenport gridiron or a personal remembrance or reflection on him. All submissions should be e-mailed to Tim at [email protected].

Greenport Cub Scout Pack 51 will hold a fundraising chicken dinner on Wednesday, April 14, at the Soundview Restaurant from noon to 8 p.m. The money raised will be used for a trip to the New Jersey Liberty Science Center. Tickets are $17 per person (sit-down or takeout) and are available from any Cub Scout, by calling Midge Melrose at 477-0542, or at the door.

How appropriate it was that “It’s A Small World” is part of the Walt Disney World experience. While Jim and I were lying on the beach at the Caribbean Beach Resort, whom did I spot but June, Doug and Erica Peterson walking from the Aruba pool area to the larger pool complex. It really is a small world! Nelson Wetmore, Danielle and Chris Golden and family and the Fitting/Garren family were also at Disney but we didn’t happen to run into them.

Birthdays are being celebrated this week by Sean Sage, John Sabatino, Lisa Cooper, Kate Nedoszytko Perryman and Katie Zurek, all today, April 8; Lindsay Riemer and Jessica Golden on the 9th; Matilda Palmore and Bobby Doucett on the 10th; Melanie Recchion and Paige Pope on the 11th; Jason Grattan, Debbie Barszczewski Schade, Valerie Gatz and my uncle Bernie Heaney (the patriarch of the Heaney family, who will turn 81) on the 12th; Robert White III, Steve Damiani and my two cousins Kassandra Chouinard and Ed Bondarchuk, on the 13th; and another cousin, Theresa Bubb, as well as Babette Cornine on the 14th.

Just as in times of adversity you find out who your true friends are, when Duke makes it to the NCAA Tournament finals, you find out just how many Blue Devils haters there are out there. Hate away, people. When it comes down to it, Duke made it to the “Big Dance” (and won) and your team was home watching it. (Unless, of course, you’re a Butler fan.)
