Police say Greenport man exposed himself to youths

James Lawrence

James Lawrence, 33, of 430 Second St. in Greenport, was charged with public lewdness and burglary at 2:33 a.m. on Monday after he broke into a house on Main Street in the village, went to a window and exposed himself to two girls, ages 11 and 15, who were in a house across the street, Southold Town Police reported.

Police said that Mr. Lawrence had gained the girls’ attention by whistling and throwing pebbles at their window.

Mr. Lawrence served time in jail last year for several previous counts of public lewdness in the village and has been out of jail “for some time now,” said Southold Town Police Capt. Martin Flatley.

Capt. Flatley said that Mr. Lawrence, in custody at Southold Town Police headquarters until his court appearance on Friday, will likely face longer jail time this time around.

“Greenport residents are very concerned about his behavior, and rightly so,” said the police captain. “It’s alarming enough without him breaking into people’s houses.”
