Martin Mikalajczyk Jr.

Martin Mikalajczyk Jr. passed away on April 6, 2010, at the age of 88. He was born in Riverhead on May 24, 1921, to Mary (nà e Balser) and Martin Mikalajczyk, joining a family that also included siblings Louis, Edward, John, Charles, Alex, Frank (who died in infancy), Marion, George, Bernard and Stanley.

Martin resided all his life in the very house he was born in. After graduating from Riverhead High School, he attended the seminary but stepped aside for his brother George to attend. Martin taught himself to work with textiles and wood and ultimately established himself as an expert upholsterer. He supported many charities and favorite animal causes throughout his lifetime and enjoyed traveling, gardening and attending Mass at St. Isidore’s Parish.

He took care of his mother, Mary, until her death in 1983. He leaves behind his brothers Eddie, Johnny, Charlie, Ben and Stanley (Shine), along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Martin bequeathed his body to science upon his death. He felt that having survived heart bypass surgery — coupled with serious complications during that same surgery — this was his way of giving back.

At Martin’s request, a memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Isidore R.C. Church, Pulaski Street, Riverhead, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2010.
