Southold-Peconic

I omitted so many members of the Mighty Mites team in last week’s column that a “do-over” is in order. Those who participated in the halftime puck shoot at Nassau Coliseum were: Kieran Bohannon, Thomas Cooper, Diloni Di Lorenzo, C.J. Dorr, Mackenzie Dorr, Anna Hamid, Cole Hilary, Shane Horace, Kayla Ireland, James Jacobs, Jonathan Jacobs, Connor Kalmus, Kenny Latham, Colin McCarthy, Matthew Mullen, Owen Klipstein, Tate Klipstein, Ryan Palumbo, Grady Roppelt, Bridget Ryan, Emmet Ryan, Matthew Schill, Stephen Schill, Roman Smith, Jenna Smith and Ben Ward.

Happy 60th anniversary to Madeleine and Bernard Heinisch, who celebrate on April 30.

Some Earth Day (April 22) birthdays did not make it into last week’s column: Belated happy birthday to Tate Klipstein, Emily Pressler and Helen Verity, who enjoyed her 96th. Bob Boergesson, son of Swede and Johanna, reached the half-century mark on the 26th; Tom Byrnes celebrates today, the 29th; Robert Anderson on the 30th; and Tony Kryl on May 1. Victoria Caggiano’s parents, sister, Sarah, and brother, Nick, send birthday wishes to her in Boston on May 2; Dan Byrnes and Kayleigh Macchirole celebrate on the 3rd; and Reese Thompson on the 4th.

Lucille Jones’ fifth-grade students learned about Southold’s heritage when they visited Southold Free Library’s Whitaker Historical Collection. Focusing on the Civil War and World War II, they took notes for their school reports from an original diary and letters written by Southold resident 2nd Lieutenant Edward F. Huntting of the U.S. Army’s 127th Regiment.

A children’s gardening raffle has been added to the scrapbooking prize offered at the library. Sara and David Evans have donated seed packets, a children’s gardening book, a cute gardening hat, gloves, tool set and flower pot. The drawing will be held May 15.

The “Relay Readers” Relay for Life team will hold a car wash Saturday, May 1, at Southold Presbyterian Church from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Let these young relay participants get your vehicle sparkling clean. Your free-will donation will support the American Cancer Society.

Amy Schill and Melanie Wilinski will participate in the LI 2Day Walk for Breast Cancer in June. You can mail a donation to Amy Schill at 1050 Waterview Drive, Southold 11971 or call 765-2993. Checks should be made out to LI2Day.

The Southold Music Boosters have extended the deadline for Mother’s Day plant sale orders until tomorrow, April 30. A nice selection of plants from Van Bourgondien’s in Peconic is available. For an order form, e-mail to [email protected].

Members of the Class of 1990 are in for a fun time at their 20-year reunion on July 24. Don’t be left out! Contact Kerry Graham Shay at [email protected] or 203-494-1198 to find out more.

Grace Zukas is recuperating at home after undergoing knee surgery. Hopefully, she’ll be out and about soon.

Bill and Patty Witzke are thrilled with the arrival of their first granddaughter, Emma Ann, on April 21. Emma, who weighed nine pounds, two ounces, was welcomed by her parents, Colleen and Brian, and 3-year-old brother, Adam.
