Doubles sweep pullsRocky Pt. past Mattituck

Going into Tuesday afternoon’s boys tennis match between Rocky Point and Mattituck, with both teams heading into the showdown with 2-0 records in Suffolk County League VIII, it figured to be a close match.

Four of the seven matches went to three sets, but in the end, visiting Rocky Point edged out the Tuckers, 5-2, to take sole possession of first place.

“This was a real good match,” Mattituck Coach Mike Huey said. “There were a lot of deuce points. The match could have gone either way.”

The Eagles, after splitting the four singles matches, sealed the win by winning all three doubles matches. In first doubles, Austin Whyte and Danny Lounberg outlasted Jake Gamberg and Brett Jermusyk, 6-4, 6-7 (7-4), 6-2. The second doubles team of Adam Pometti and Peter Valerio rallied to beat Kevin Reyer and Jeff Strider, 6-0, 1-6, 6-3. In third doubles, Steve Fotion and Will O’Connor swept Nick De Long and Eamon Deegan, 6-2, 6-4.

The tone of the match was set right away in first singles. Even though Rocky Point’s Sam Agoglia beat Joe Pfaff, 6-1, 6-1, most of the games went 40-40 before Agoglia prevailed to get the win.

Connor Davis of Mattituck came from behind to beat Ruslan Ardasta, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4, at second singles.

“Connor’s opponent was a good baseline player who kept returning the ball,” Huey said. “Once Connor took the initiative and came in more to the net, he had a better approach and won the match.”

In third singles, Zac Myslinski of Rocky Point rolled past Tim Young, 6-4, 6-0.

Casey Ciamaricone of Mattituck rallied to beat Kamil Remiscewski, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0, in fourth singles.

“Casey was in control most of the match,” Huey said. “He made some mistakes in the second set and he was upset with himself, but he righted the ship and finished his opponent off.”

Looking back over the seven matches, Huey believes that on a different day his Tuckers could have won.

“We know Rocky Point and William Floyd are two of the top teams and when we play them it is going to be a close match,” Huey said. “But the way this match went today, it really could have gone either way.”
