Oysterponds

Whatever happened to May Day celebrations? I have fond memories of colorful clothes, flowers and dancing around ribboned poles. (Of course if you know me well, colorful clothes is always a biggie.) In our rush-rush, busy-busy, hurry-up world, it’s sad that we’ve lost some fun traditions.

One tradition that’s still with us, thankfully, is the annual spring concert by the North Fork Chorale. Orient Congregational Church will host the concert this Sunday, May 2, at 3 p.m. Call Chris Franke at 323-3833 to reserve your $10 ticket.

The East Marion Community Association’s annual meeting will be Saturday, May 15, 10 a.m. to noon, at the East Marion firehouse. Congressman Tim Bishop will speak about Plum Island and other federal issues that affect our area. Everyone is welcome.

This year’s school board election will take place Tuesday, May 18. EMCA and The Orient Association will sponsor a candidate forum in advance of the vote. Check back next week for the date and time.

The rain from earlier in the week will have passed by now, so if you’re inclined to clean the attic, please keep two organizations in mind. OCA, which safeguards our monuments, is always grateful for donations of flags to fly over them. Call Ed Wright at 323-3977 for details. And OHS will host an antiquities auction in June and would appreciate your donations. Call Ted Webb at 323-2622 and he will gladly fetch your items.

Speaking of cleaning, OHS needs folks who love to garden to help clean out its beds, prune, etc., this Saturday at 9 a.m. Call 323-2480 to sign on or get details.

The monthly fellowship supper at Orient Congregational Church is next Wednesday, May 5, at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome. Please bring a dish to share. The new church website will be up and running by tomorrow, so pay it a visit at Orientcong.org.

Thankfully, despite volcanic interruptions, all 70-plus pilgrims who traveled to the Holy Land made it back safely and in one piece. The group was diverse but seemed to have a common goal: to walk in the footsteps of God. I think many of us would agree that when we look around at all the good work that happens here in Oysterponds and Southold Town, and the folks that accompanied us on our journey, we walk in the footsteps of God every day.
