Betty M. Tyler

Betty M. Tyler of Mattituck died May 18 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 87.

She was born Jan. 31, 1923, to H. Nelson and Dorothea (Gardner) Smith in Riverhead, where she was raised and later graduated from Riverhead High School.

Ms. Tyler worked as a secretary for 27 years at Riverhead High School. After retiring she worked for the Mattituck Park District and Winiarz Liquor Store in Mattituck.

She was a 71-year member of the Mattituck Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a member and past president of the Suffolk County Ladies Auxiliary. She was a parishioner of Mattituck Presbyterian Church.

Predeceased by her husband, Henry, and son Charles Sr., she is survived by her son Greg, of Mattituck; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Family received visitors May 21 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where Mattituck Fire Department and the Ladies Auxiliary paid their respects. Funeral services were held May 22 at the funeral home by the Rev. George Gaffga. Interment followed at Riverhead Cemetery.
