Mattituck-Laurel

With graduation just weeks away, it’s no surprise that the MHS Class of 1960 is planning its 50th class reunion for June 26. Please contact Barbara Mathews at 298-4676 if you know the whereabouts of the following alums: Sally Davis, Richard Hill, William Kauneckas, Mary Anne Rieckman, Joan Ann Rolfes and Marjorie Romanowski.

Alexandra and Dimitri Papadopoulos have lots to be proud of. Their son, Christopher, is completing his first year at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of New York Institute of Technology. In addition, their daughter, Jacqueline, graduates this weekend from Vassar College, her mother’s alma mater, and has just learned that she, too, will attend New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in the fall. Congratulations!

Congratulations to Kayla Gabelman, an MHS junior who attends BOCES daily for computer technology. Last week, Kayla was inducted into the National Technical Honor Society.

Bravo to Billy Gremler and Dan Bladykas, who completed 60-plus miles of skateboarding to raise money for breast cancer. You can still donate by contacting [email protected] or firstgiving.com/skateforce.

The Reyer family also has much to be proud of. Cadet Lieutenant Kevin Reyer, MHS junior and member of NJROTC, was named New York State Cadet of the Year and runner-up cadet nationwide. This is a first for our school among over 2,000 units across the country.

Frank and Debbie Polistena are smiling from ear to ear as they announce that their daughter, Caitlin, MHS Class of 2003, will attend New York College of Medicine in the fall.

The Mattituck Fire Department was busy during April. It responded to 39 calls, including 30 rescue calls, four automatic alarms, two standbys; one carbon monoxide, one motor vehicle and one brush fire. Thanks to all the men and women who give their time to keep us safe.

Happy birthday wishes go out his week to Brady Ulmet Jr., James McDonald and Kevin Litchhult today, May 20; Frankie Benedetto on the 22nd; Stacy Moyer and Jay Slotkin on the 23rd; and Richie Koch on the 24th.

A mystery father-son team discovered 12 baby ducks in a storm drain container. Keith and Barbara Radich broke out their old crab nets and two hours later the dozen ducklings were swimming with their mama in James Creek. I love happy endings!

Happy silver anniversary to Jim and Kathy McMahon, who toast their years together on May 25. Congratulations also go to their son, Brendon, who was named Mattituck Fire Department’s Junior Firefighter of the Year.

The MHS DECA chapter held its Mattituck Idol fundraiser last Friday evening. The winners were Alyssa Scartozzi for the junior high and Jessica Williams for the high school. Best Entertainer was Nick Mele. A special performance by last year’s winner, Rachel Conner, was one of the evening’s highlights. A round of applause for all the students who gave it their all on stage!
