Sunday is Mother’s Day. Actress and mother Sophia Loren once said, “When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice: once for herself and once for her child.” So this weekend, take time to think about your mother and share with her how much she means to you. Happy Mother’s Day!
I recently heard from Denise Markut about her son, Jacob Antignano, who is currently in Afghanistan with a small platoon of Rangers that travels towns to cities to protect the locals from Al-Qaeda. He has shared with his family how poor conditions are and that many children have been orphaned during this conflict. Jacob said it is really important for the troops’ morale to receive mail from home, so Denise thought she’d share his address with our community. She also wanted us to know that Jacob is “interested in motorcycles, dirt bikes, trucks, girls, good food and laughter. Typical guy stuff. I’m sure he would love to hear from his friends on the North Fork. Sister Anne Lynch of Sacred Heart Parish has announced registration for kindergartners, first-graders and new students for fall religious education classes will take place Mondays, May 10 and 17. Call Sister Anne at 734-2568 to arrange a time.
The Mattituck-Cutchogue PTSA really outdid itself at this year’s fashion show. It takes many hands to make this event work, and the proceeds go back to our kids in the form of programs, scholarships and other things that enhance their educational experience. Special thanks to all the extremely generous local businesses and to the community for its support.
The first ever Tucker Bowl, sponsored by Mattituck High School Students Against Destructive Decisions was a huge success. Student assistance counselor Andrea Nydeggar spearheaded this effort with the help of club members and teachers. Hats off! Job well done!

The MHS Student Art Exhibition opens Tuesday, May 18, 3:30-9 p.m., with drawings, paintings, ceramics, sculpture, fashion illustration and photography. Also featured is work by 24 students who participated in the NYSATA Portfolio Assessment. The exhibit will continue on the first floor of the high school through May 25.
A ‘Meet the Candidates Night,’ sponsored by the Mattituck PTSA, will take place Thursday, May 13, at 7 p.m. in the high school library. Three school board candidates, Lynne Krauza and Janique Nine (both incumbents) and William Gatz are running for two seats. Bring your questions.
