Charles S. DeVoe

Charles S. DeVoe of Orient died May 1 at his home. He was 87.

He was born April 27, 1923, in Hawthorne, N.J., to Carl and Sarah (Sayer) DeVoe. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 and became a private first class.

He married Helen Kiernan in College Point, N.Y., on Jan. 25, 1947. Mr. DeVoe was a self-employed builder for over 30 years.

According to his family, he enjoyed gardening and clamming.

Predeceased by his wife in 1991 and his brother, John, in 1999, he is survived by his sons, Robert, of Shelter Island, William, of Woodstock, N.Y., Thomas, of Glen Spey, N.Y., and Richard, of Orient; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors May 4 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport, where funeral services were conducted May 5 by Father Thomas Murray. Interment followed at Orient Central Cemetery.
