If you see some crazy lady dancing around the streets of Greenport, fear not. It’s just me celebrating the start of my summer vacation!
‘Only in Greenport’ was the catch phrase last Thursday at Greenport High School. Tom Rabbitt, director of guidance, spent the better part of an hour knocking on the door of a student’s home. He knew the student needed to take a particular final exam in order to graduate and there was just no way he was going to let that student not graduate. Now that’s dedication and going above and beyond!
Graduation week is upon us and I’d like to offer congratulations to all our Greenport graduates: the kindergarteners (GHS Class of 2022), who graduated Tuesday; the sixth-graders (Class of 2016), who graduated last night; and the Class of 2010, for whom commencement takes place Sunday at 1 p.m. May all your dreams come true.
Listen up! The skate park is in dire need of repair and skate park festival organizers are looking for corporate/business donations and sponsorships. They’ll also gladly accept help from any parent interested in donating funds or services. The festival is Saturday, July 17, 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m. (raindate, July 18). Contact Mike and Michelle Bendik at [email protected] to lend your support. All festival proceeds go back to renovate the skate park.
As an aside, I’d like to mention my nephew, Marcus Tooker, who was in awe of professional BMX Park riders Ryan Nyquist and Dave Mirra. Marcus honed his bike-riding skills at his home park in Hyannis, Mass., and right here at Greenport’s skate park. It took time and dedication, but Marcus now competes with/against Ryan and Dave. So you just never know where the next BMX or skate professional could come from; it might even be right here in Greenport!

Carl and Audrey (Klipp) Thilburg, former Greenport residents and Greenport High School sweethearts, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on June 28 in Kissimmee, Fla. Congratulations!
Special birthday wishes today, June 24, to Carter Blasko, who turns 10, from his mom and dad, Carla and Gary, and his big sister, Gabby. I hope you have a spectacular day, Carter.
Also celebrating birthdays this week are Chris Latney, Betty Kiernan, Sarah Manfredi and Karre Brown on the 24th; Steven Webb on the 26th; Bonnie Angevine and AnnaChrista Garren on the 27th; Arthur Smith, Bob Saetta and Brandon Quarty on the 28th; and Judy (you’ll always be one of my favorite and extra-special people) Marshall on the 29th.
Special anniversary wishes to my daughter and son-in-law, Jenn and Dan Decker, who celebrate their first year together on the 28th.
I hope the following couples also have their happiest anniversaries yet. Nancy and Richard Jensen will celebrate their 38th on June 25; Donna and Jim Harrison will toast 22 years of marriage, also on the 25th; my brother-in-law and his wife, Mike and Chris Dinizio, celebrate on the 27th; and Kay (Kettering) and Tom Welch’s 26th anniversary is June 30.
What a treat it was last week when Jim’s mom called to let us know that his cousin Eddie Cook (son of Anna Dinizio Cook and the late Bob Cook) was here visiting his North Fork family. Ed managed to make train connections all the way from San Diego, Calif. to Montauk for the Cook family reunion and added another day to his trip to visit with the Dinizio side of the family. It was great seeing him again.
