Greenport man survives after he’s hit by two cars

A Greenport man was hit by two cars while crossing Route 25 in Aquebogue Friday at about 9 p.m. and is now in stable but critical condition, Riverhead Town Police said Wednesday.

Charles Luscher, 48, was on the south side of Main Road when he attempted to cross the street just west of Shade Tree Lane. He was struck by a westbound sedan, police said. After the driver pulled over to help the man, who had been knocked down onto the road, another westbound sedan struck him. That driver also stopped.

Mr. Luscher was taken by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, though a Suffolk County Medevac helicopter had arrived and landed nearby, witnesses said. He was later transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment of multiple broken bones and other injuries, according to authorities.

“The fact that he is alive is absolutely amazing,” said Riverhead police officer Charles Mauceri.

Police said the investigation is not criminal and no arrests are expected at this time.

Witnesses said they saw the victim lying by the side of the road shortly after the accident. A witness said she saw a helicopter land in the nearby parking lot of Our Lady Redeemer Lutheran Church on Main Road.
