Clarence T. Bergen

Clarence T. “Bud” Bergen of Mattituck, a lifelong North Fork resident, died May 26 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 93.

He was born Sept. 23, 1916, to Frank and Grace (Hubbard) Bergen in Greenport.

Mr. Bergen worked as a landscaper for Frank Murphy Garden Center and Florist in Mattituck. He joined the Mattituck Fire Department at the age of 18 and was an honorary member of the Mattituck Lions Club. According to family, he enjoyed assisting senior citizens and was often referred to as the “Mayor of Mattituck.”

Predeceased by his wife, Mary (Gallagher), in 2005 and his sister, Frances Bergen, he is survived by his daughters, Sharon and Rosemary; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Private graveside services were held June 1 at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue by Deacon Jeff Sykes. Arrangements were handled by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
