Cutchogue-New Suffolk

Thankfully last weekend’s plans on the North Fork were not affected by predictions of thunderstorms, 30 mph winds or even a tornado! The Relay for Life successfully brought hundreds together to support cancer research. Kudos to all those who organized teams, walked and raised the money support this event and to all those who donated!

Weather predictions also did not affect the farewell luncheon for North Fork Reform Synagogue student Rabbi Jill Dornek. Skies were clear and winds were manageable as members gathered at the beautiful waterfront home of NFRS treasurer and president (respectively) Kay and Irwin Freeman. Members including the Lastorias, Eilenbergs, Gordons, Parks, Hellmans, Peters, Rosenthals and others provided delicacies and libations enjoyed by all. Everyone present joined in to express a fond farewell to Rabbi Jill by singing a clever tune composed by Kay Freeman to the tune of “Bye Bye Birdie.”

Tom and Bev Christianson are celebrating the safe arrival of their fourth grandchild, Natalie Faith Jordan, who greeted her parents, Heidi and Grayson, on June 3. Big sister Bethany lovingly welcomed her into this world.

Approximately 50 Cutchogue Fire Department firefighters extinguished a blaze at Braun’s Oyster Company shortly after 8 p.m. this past Saturday. Thankfully, they were able to contain and extinguish the fire. Thanks to the CFD firefighters, it was back to business as usual on Sunday.

Our NJROTC’s overall second-place finish in the Area 4 Finals was confirmed last week. This award has earned the cadets a trip to next year’s Navy Nationals in Pensacola, Fla. Way to go cadets!

Living out here on the North Fork, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and not spend time enjoying what everyone comes out here to enjoy. A couple of a weeks ago friends from my school days came out to celebrate a birthday and we spent the day as the tourists do — a wine tasting at Osprey’s Dominion and enjoying local cuisine. As a “small world” would have it, the birthday girl knows the proprietors of the Iron Skillet in Mattituck. We topped off a perfect day enjoying “real home cooking made to order” in the dining room of a century-old Victorian farmhouse.

Save money on car insurance by taking the New York State Driver Safety Course at Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library Tuesday and Wednesday, June 15 and 16. The fee is $30. Students in sixth through ninth grades can register for the “Battle of the Books” on Saturday, June 12, between 2 and 4 p.m. Have a good week!
