Fogarty, G&C roll to easy victories
They both make it look so easy.
Fogarty Air Conditioning Service and G&C Petroleum both rolled to lopsided victories last Thursday in the North Fork Women’s Softball League at the Polo Grounds in Greenport.
Fogarty (2-0) scored four times in the first inning and added seven more runs in the fourth on the way to an 11-0 win over Eric’s Lawn Care. Elaine Milovich was the hitting star for Fogarty, going 5 for 5.
Milovich’s single ignited the first-inning uprising. Holli Bollman followed with a single. Diana Stulsky ripped a run-scoring single, Lynn Eckert had a run-scoring double, Lisa Lappe lofted a sacrifice fly and Cathy Checklick singled home the fourth run.
In the fourth, after Tanya Rivera and Jill Tapper singled, Milovich, Stulsky and Eckert all stroked run-scoring doubles, and Bollman, Lappe, Checklick and Melissa Groenveld all singled home runs.
Stulsky, Fogarty’s winning pitcher, tossed the five-hit shutout.
“We played excellent, tight defense,” she said, “and Lynn made a great running catch in the outfield. I was really pleased how we played defensively.”
Jackie Goy had two hits for Eric’s Lawn Care (0-2).
In the other game, G&C clobbered Community Speech Language and Learning Center, 32-1. After scoring twice in the first inning, G&C (2-0) took command of the mercy-rule-shortened four-and-a-half-inning game with an 18-run explosion in the second. G&C then added five in the third and seven more in the fourth.
Olga Turner, G&C’s winning pitcher, helped her own cause with six hits. Laurie Mickaliger and Cathy Daniels both had five hits. Jackie Zilnicki rapped four hits and Emily Commins had three.
Community Speech Language and Learning Center (0-1) scored its lone run in the top of the fifth inning as Lindsey Gallagher singled, Katelyn Dunne singled and Madison Wingate singled home Gallagher. Defensively, Gallagher, Dunne, Sarah Payne and Jessica Milligan all made sparkling plays in the field.
“They are a brand-new team,” G&C’s Jane van den Thoorn said. “We played well. Every girl on our team got a hit. It will take them [Community] a little time to come together as a team.”
“We’ve been practicing, but with a new team comes some mistakes,” she said. “But all in all, we had a really fun time and we look forward to our progress throughout the season.”
