At this time of year our kids are busy as the school year comes to an end, juggling many activities outside of school while still managing homework and preparations for final exams. On May 16 Jennifer Lengyel represented Riverside Gymnastic Academy at the USAIGC New York State Gymnastics competition. She competed at the Platinum Level — the highest — and placed first in vault, balance beam, uneven parallel bars and floor exercise, as well as all-around. Two weeks earlier she’d taken the individual Platinum Level beam and vault championships. We wish Jenn luck as she travels to Florida to represent the academy at the national competition this month.

June birthdays sometimes get lost in the shuffle of seasonal festivities. But we wish happy birthday this week to Karenann Volinski today, June 10; Shelby Pape and Karen Ross on the 11th; Michael Raynor on the 12th; Carolyn Boeckman, Danielle Hudson and Daniel Harbes on the 13th; and Lia Benedetto on the June 14.

Just a reminder: If you’re a member of the MHS Class of 1985, you’re invited to attend this year’s commencement on Saturday, June 26, at 10 a.m. Seats will be reserved for your class. Come continue the tradition!

Mattituck-Laurel Library has planned a summer full of activities for both kids and adults. You can register on July 7 at 10 a.m. for the adult reading club, “Cruise Into a Good Book.” Bev Wowak will lead book discussion groups throughout the summer, including these titles: “The Unlikely Spy” by Daniel Silva, June 29 at 4 p.m.; “Death at LaFenice” by Donna Leon, July 13 at 4 p.m.; and “A Drink Before War” by Dennis Lehane, July 27 at 4 p.m. Drop by and pick up your copies. The clock is ticking as this year’s Strawberry Festival quickly approaches. As always, it’s slated for Father’s Day weekend. One difference this year is that the rides will be open for everyone to enjoy on Thursday after Hulling Night, which starts at 5:30. Of course, the fair and rides continue as usual Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. The new Strawberry Queen will be crowned at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Bring your friends and family, support the Lions Club and enjoy the North Fork at its best!

If you happen to see the Town Board meeting on television this week you’ll see Supervisor Scott Russell recognize Lenny Llewellyn for his 50 years of service to the New York State Boating Course. In recent weeks, Lenny has also been recognized by representatives from Legis. Ed Romaine’s office, the sheriff’s office, the State of New York and the Peconic Bay Power Squadron. Congratulations, Lenny, and thank you for your years of service!
