Cutchogue-New Suffolk

Before each Osprey game, Cutchogue Fire Department Commissioner James Fogarty Sr. has been setting up the public address system, which the department provides. In honor of CFD, Chief McCaffery was asked to throw out the first pitch at the second game of a doubleheader against the Riverhead Tomcats at the Cochran Park ball field in Peconic. A southpaw, Chief McCaffery “took to the mound, looked for the strike zone and then hurled the ball with respectable speed and accuracy over home plate and into the waiting glove of Osprey’s catcher Kurt Schlangen. The crowd broke into applause, and Chief McCaffery breathed a sigh of relief as he greeted the catcher and the rest of the Ospreys players. He then received the ball he pitched, complete with all of the [players] signatures.”

The Ospreys are currently leading in the 2010 Hamptons Division regular season with a record of 24 wins and 10 losses. Wishing the team all the best on their remaining games!

On behalf of CFD, golf chairman Jeff Smith would like to thank all the friends and supporters who so generously contributed to the 11th annual golf outing on July 19 at Island’s End Golf and Country Club. The outing raises funds for The Victoria/Glover Scholarship Fund and The Panther Racing Team.

Congratulations to this year’s winners of the Victoria/Glover Scholarships — Bryan Tyler, Ben Blados, Nick Troisi and Ryan Wesnofske — and to Brando Lonk, winner of the Steven Cooper Award for a college-bound student with interest in NJROTC and the military. Congratulation’s to new grandparents Nancy Dowling of Cutchogue and Pat and Chris McCarthy of Laurel on the birth of Aileen Rose Dowling, born May 20 to proud parents Connor and Kate.

Lauren Carlson, a student at Lemoyne College, was chosen from among nearly 1,000 applicants to participate in a 10-week Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship program, which places students in paid internships at several Department of Energy facilities. Lauren is working 40 hours a week with scientists at Brookhaven National Lab doing research that involves working with the infrared (IR) beamline, IR microscopes and detectors, which measure the vibrations of cellular components measuring the adverse effects sodium fluoride has on human cells and tissues. Wow!

Do you know a woman currently undergoing chemotherapy? If so, Cleaning for a Reason (cleaningforareason.org) is here to help. The service will provide free monthly housecleaning for four months while she is in treatment. All she has to do is sign up and have her doctor fax a note confirming the treatment. Cleaning for a Reason will make arrangements with a participating maid service in her Zip code. Be a blessing, pass it on.

Have a good week!
