Greenport man dies in dirtbike collision

The two impounded dirt bikes taken by Southold Town Police from the scene of a fatal collision on a private road in East Marion Sunday night.

A 23-year-old Greenport man died Sunday night after he and another dirtbike rider collided on a private road in East Marion, Southold Police said.

Jefferson Treadwell was on his dirtbike headed west in Cove Beach Estates shortly before 11 p.m. when he crashed into another bike driven in the opposite direction by Terrence Lawrence, 29, also of Greenport.

Both dirtbike riders were taken by the East Marion Fire Department rescue squad to Eastern Long Island Hospital, where Mr. Treadwell was pronounced dead. Mr. Lawrence was later transferred to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where his condition Wednesday was listed as critical but stable.

The fatal accident was the second Mr. Lawrence has been involved in within the past five months. In both cases, the deceased was a 23-year-old Greenport man.

The dirtbikes involved in Sunday’s accident were impounded for safety inspections. Criminal charges are pending, police said.

In the previous accident, passenger Corey Freeman died when Mr. Lawrence, driving a 1999 Infiniti on North Road in Southold shortly after 4 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13, swerved to avoid a deer. The car left the roadway and struck a utility pole east of Boisseau Avenue, according to police reports. Mr. Lawrence was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. No charges were filed.
