Barbara M. Andrade

Barbara Merleine Andrade, 72, beloved wife of Joseph “Pete” Andrade Jr., journeyed into Heaven on Sunday, June 27.

She was born at Eastern Long Island Hospital to Malcolm P. (Mac) and Merleine W. Rackett (nà e Baker) on November 11, 1937.

After graduating Greenport High School, she married her high school sweetheart at the Greenport Presbyterian Church on June 21, 1957. Together they made their home in Orient and raised their four children. She recently joined St. Agnes Church and they renewed their wedding vows on their 53rd wedding anniversary.

Barbara retired on December 31, 2009, from the Town of Southold after 52 years of service as a Notary Public and Senior Justice Court Clerk.

She was a member of the N.Y.S. Association of Magistrates Court Clerks Inc. When her children were younger she was heavily involved in the PTA, she served on the Committee for the Handicapped, and she was a member of the Orient Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Oysterponds Rod and Gun Club. She taught Sunday School for the Greenport Presbyterian Church. She and Pete would organize and run youth nights at Orient Poquatuck Hall and they rescued wildlife.

She greatly loved and enjoyed her family and her waterfall with koi fish and frogs. She also enjoyed hunting with her husband and Labs, skeet shooting, riding motorcycles, the beach, traveling, horses, family gatherings and her beautiful flower gardens.

She was predeceased by their son, Jon Malcolm Andrade, in August of 1986, and her parents, Malcolm in July of 2007 and Merleine in April of 2009.

She leaves behind brokenhearted her husband Joseph “Pete” of 53 years; their son Joseph and daughter in-law Henrietta of Florida; their son Jeffrey of Orient; their daughter Jill and son-in-law Glen Franke of Southold; as well as five grandchildren: Jacqueline Zweifel, Joseph Andrade IV, Jenise Andrade, Jonna Leigh Franke and Peter Daniel Franke; four great-grandchildren: Maia Wood, Lilah Zweifel, Reece Zweifel, Aaliyah Andrade; her Aunt and Uncle Harriet and Theodore Rackett of Orient; her brothers and their wives: David and Sylvia Rackett of Alabama, Charles and Hoss Rackett of Florida and Malcolm Rackett; her sister-in-law, Shirley Reiter of Orient; nieces, nephews and their Labs, Mikey and Buddy, and a cat, Beary.

The family received friends on Tuesday, June 29, at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral service was held Wednesday, June 30, at St. Agnes Church in Greenport and interment was in the family plot at St. Agnes Cemetery in Greenport.

Her family asks that donations be made to the ASPCA, The American Heart Association, The American Cancer Society or charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
