‘You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” — Erma Bombeck on Independence Day.

Another Fourth of July weekend has come and gone, and what a great one it was. Perfect weather made all events a success and everywhere you looked, people seemed to be enjoying all of it.

2010 SHS graduate Jessica Orlando received two scholarships that were inadvertently omitted at commencement. She received both a $500 award from the Suffolk County Girl Scouts and a $1,500 Strawberry Queen scholarship. Congratulations.

Twenty-five members of the SHS Class of 1960 recently gathered for their 50th reunion. The fun began with an informal get-together Friday evening at Sophie’s, followed by a tree planting at the school. Classmates enjoyed a buffet dinner at Townsend Manor Inn and had a visit from class advisers Larry and Rosemary Presby, who married back in 1960, a week after this class graduated. Congratulations and happy anniversary!

The Class of 1980, meanwhile, is putting the finishing touches on plans for its July 24 reunion on July 24. Class members who haven’t responded yet, should do so ASAP by calling 765-6018 or e-mailing [email protected].

Southold Historical Society’s summer fundraiser is this Saturday evening, July 10, 5-8 p.m. at Brecknock Hall in Greenport. A little history: Brecknock Hall was built in the 1850s for David Gelston Floyd, grandson of Long Island’s Declaration of Independence signer, William Floyd. The evening will feature a silent auction, a beer/wine bar, finger foods and local produce. Tickets can be purchased for $75 and at the Society’s office on Main Road in Southold, across from Rothman’s, or at the door.

Find that perfect beach book and support the Friends of Southold Free Library. The Book Cottage is open Wednesdays, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The Friends fund all of the library’s summer programs and activities for children and teens.

Happy 85th birthday to Bob Mallgraf on July 12. Bob is one of the remaining survivors of the Japanese attack on the USS Franklin during World War II.

Other folks with birthdays coming up are Cindy Locrotondo on the 9th; Eileen Bracken and Peggy Killian on the 10th; Tom Loper and Lois Manfredi (who reaches a milestone) on the 12th; and Marge Butkovich on the 13th.

A very happy anniversary to Dick and Charlotte Mullen, who will toast their 50 years together on July 9.
