Corwin makes difference for Fogarty in defeat of G&C

It was a showdown worthy of the top two teams in the North Fork Women’s Softball League. And when it was over, when Fogarty Air Conditioning Service strung together a pair of rallies in the fourth and fifth innings to beat G&C Petroleum, 6-1, last Thursday at the Polo Grounds in Greenport, it was the two-time reigning champion Fogarty team that stood alone in first place.

This game was a classic pitchers’ duel between Fogarty’s Melissa Corwin and G&C’s Olga Turner. Neither team mounted much of a threat the first three innings. But Fogarty finally broke through with a pair of runs in the fourth inning as Diana Stulsky and Lynn Eckhardt singled, setting the stage for Corwin’s run-scoring single and a run-scoring double off the bat of Courtney Meringer.

Fogarty (5-0) then took command of the game with four more runs in the fifth. Singles by Cathy Checklick and Melissa Groeneveld were followed by run-scoring hits by Elaine Milovich, Stulsky, Eckhardt and Corwin.

G&C (3-2) finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh after Jane van den Thoorn singled and went to second on Jackie Zilnicki’s fielder’s choice. Van den Thoorn eventually crossed the plate on Emily Commins’ run-scoring single.

But Corwin, who tossed a five-hitter, slammed the door on the G&C rally to preserve the Fogarty win.

“This was a well-pitched, good defensive game,” Stulsky said.

Van den Thoorn agreed.

“Fogarty is a very, very good defensive team,” van den Thoorn said. “Wherever we hit the ball, they were there.”

In the other game last Thursday night, Allstate (3-2) continued its fine play, beating Community Speech, Language and Learning Center, 22-8. Allstate, leading by 2-1 after three innings, broke the game wide open with 11 big runs in the fourth inning. Allstate then added eight runs in the fifth.

Thirteen walks by Community Speech opened the door for Allstate’s two uprisings.

Jill Clacherty paced Allstate, going 3 for 5 with four runs batted in and two runs scored. Amy Reuschle, Jess Heaney, Tracy Sutton, Jess Michaelis and Erin Snyder all had two hits each. Sutton drove in three runs while Erin Bednoski, Jill Schroeder and Snyder each knocked in a pair of runs.

Schroeder and Michaelis played superb defense on the right side of the diamond to thwart a potential Community Speech (0-4) rally. Amy Kirincic pitched the final three innings for Allstate. She struck out four in the last two innings.
