It’s certainly been one of the hottest summers we’ve experienced, and I’ve even heard some say that they are looking forward to fall. I’m not going to wish it away yet, it goes fast enough!

Family and friends from near and far gathered at the home of Peggy and Jim Murphy for a barbecue to celebrate son Steve Dow’s 50th birthday. It was a fun trip down memory lane as some of Steve’s friends from high school attended.

A presentation on Southold Free Library’s proposed expansion/renovation, including the planning process and architectural renderings, will take place today at 10 a.m. in the community room. A Q&A period will follow.

Andrew Scott was vacationing with his family at Hither Hills when the “real world” kicked in: A position as campus minister at St. John’s University became available. He accepted, left camp and returned home to Southold to prepare for his new job. Andrew graduated from St. John’s in January.

Happy anniversary to Ruth and Phil Eyrich, who toasted 68 years of marriage on July 18. They are the parents of Phyllis and the Rev. Garret Johnson.

An exhibition of the history of the Cosden estate, “Eastward,” will be on display at the Southold Historical Society’s Mayne Gallery July 24-Sept. 19. The Soundview Avenue estate was one of the largest on the North Fork back in the early 1900s and was owned by businessman and horse breeder Alfred Cosden.

Margaret Daniel won the folding backpack chair and books in the last Friends raffle. Hope Rich created and donated August’s raffle prize, a framed painting of the Horton Point lighthouse. The drawing will be held Aug. 16.

Happy birthday to Cindy Bohn and Dave Conrad on the 25th; Joanne Hiney on the 26th; and Jason Mann on the 27th. Also, a very happy belated birthday to Kate Park on the 18th.

As an engineer for NASCAR, former Southold resident Mike Wheeler spends most of the year traveling with the team. Last weekend, he had a rare opportunity to fly home for a few days to visit his parents, Dick and Laureen. His sister Amy, her husband, Brad and their children, Natalie and Zachary arrived from Delhi, N.Y., so Mike could meet Zachary for the first time.

Antoinette and Joe Cassidy were on hand last weekend when their son Brian, who graduated from the Leadership Academy in Newport, R.I. Congratulations to Brian and all the cadets who participated.
