‘Summer lovin’ had me a blast, summer lovin’ happened so fast…” As a small world would have it, while I was at St. Francis Hospital, I had the opportunity to meet Eileen Kenney, who shared with me the story of the Williamsons (her mom’s family) and the Shroeders (her dad’s). Both families summered in Cutchogue, where a summer romance developed between Eileen’s parents, leading to their marriage and her birth. The family still enjoys spending their summers at the family home.

The North Fork Reform Synagogue welcomes the very accomplished Ilene Haigh as its 2010 student rabbi. A daughter of the reform movement and fourth-year rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College in New York, she co-founded the Rodeph Shalom Young Professionals group in New York City, the Torah Study Circle, the New Mother’s Group at Ealing Liberal Synagogue in London and a support group for parents of special needs children at Larchmont Temple. Ilene Haigh began her rabbinical studies in 2002 after a 19-year career on Wall Street. As the congregation’s spiritual leader, student Rabbi Haigh will lead services and a series of weekend adult Torah study sessions at members’ homes through the year. The New Suffolk School Enrichment Fund is creating a community cookbook and is looking for recipes from everyone in the community. The not-for-profit fund benefits the New Suffolk School by supporting enrichment programs such as drama, beautification and after-school and summer activities and helping to alleviate some associated taxpayer costs. All donations are tax deductible. To submit recipes for the cookbook, please use the form included with your newsletter or visit newsuffolkschool.com, where you can print out the form. Submissions should be put in the drop box on the front porch of New Suffolk School by Sept. 17. Please spread the word!

Coming up at Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library: On Saturday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m. artist Bob Miller will give a talk and sign copies of his book of scenic watercolors, “Farms, Vineyards and Small Towns of the North Fork of Long Island.” On Saturday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m. join Jodi Gillen for “Folk Art in Stone,” a walking tour through historic Cutchogue’s Old Burying Ground, Route 25 at Harbor Lane. Congratulations to the Peconic Bay Chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America on its 25th anniversary. The guild’s next meeting will be Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church of Southold. New members of all abilities and experience are welcome.
