Ann Waldenburg Steinacher of Southold died at her home Aug. 11. She was 94.

She was born Oct. 20, 1915, in Brooklyn to Augustus and Florence (Valentine) Waldenburg. She graduated from Brooklyn Friends School in 1934, where she played varsity field hockey and tennis and was the captain of the varsity basketball team.

At the age of 25, Ms. Steinacher joined the Red Cross, serving one year in New Guinea and one in Australia during World War II. As a result of this experience, she dedicated many years of volunteer service to physically and mentally challenged veterans in Long Island VA hospitals.

In 1952 she married H. Robert Steinacher, and they lived in Huntington for 28 years. After she was widowed in 1982, she purchased an RV and toured the country with her dog, Hawkin. Later she moved to Southold, where she had spent summers as a child.

Ms. Steinacher worked several years at the Village Liquor Store in Southold and at Southold Free Library. She was a volunteer with the Southold Historical Society, San Simeon by the Sound Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, North Fork Animal Welfare League, Sunshine Society, First Presbyterian Church of Southold and Southold United Methodist Church, and she supported many other charities.

According to her family, she had been an avid golfer and league bowler and enjoyed visiting her daughter in Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. “When she could no longer excel at sports or partake in outdoor adventures,” her family said, “she became an avid bridge player.”

Predeceased by her husband and her brothers, Augustus and Stephen Waldenburg, she is survived by her daughter, Susan Steinacher-Pardy of Nome, Alaska.

Private cremation was handled by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Her ashes will be spread on Peconic Bay and Long Island Sound.

A memorial service and Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 29, at Southold United Methodist Church.
