Ellen Pihl

Ellen Pihl, formerly of East Marion, passed away peacefully on Aug. 19 at the Atlanta, Ga., home she shared with her granddaughter, Amy Hayes, and Ms. Hayes’ partner, Kate Chura. She was 96.

Born in Marvyn, Ala., she met her husband, Carl Pihl Sr., at Auburn University and after the couple wed they moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1964 they built a cottage in East Marion and made that neighborhood their permanent address in 1976.

She was predeceased by her husband and all three of their children, Barbara Hayes, Rodney Pihl and Carl Pihl Jr. as well as her grandson Eric Hayes. Survivors include her son-in-law Paul Hayes; daughter-in-law Jean Pihl; grandsons Jeffrey Hayes and Eric Pihl; and great-grandsons Bobby and Christopher Walden.

Upon returning to the South in 2008, Ms. Pihl was reunited with her sister, Susan Story, and brother, T. Oscar Ingram Jr., and his wife, Mary, who also survive her.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 11a.m. at East Marion Community Church. Interment at Calverton National Cemetery will be private.
