A lesson in native lore
Finny Dianora-Brondal, 22 months, of Sag Harbor, tries his hand at grinding corn using traditional Plains Native People techniques and tools. Finny and dozens of other children learned how to construct a tepee and created Native American crafts under the direction of Tipi Ted Saturday during Tepee Day at Fort Corchaug in Cutchogue.

The Village Green is the place to be this Saturday, Aug. 7, for the Old Town Art and Crafts Guild’s annual show and chinese auction. From from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be food and ice cream and more than 50 vendors will be on hand with original artwork and crafts. The chinese auction is getting bigger each day with gift baskets and gift certificates. Stop by the Guild on Main Road and check out all the great prizes. Don’t forget Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library’s book sale this weekend. Along with books, CDs, DVDs and puzzles, there’s a special children’s section. Hours are Friday, Aug. 6, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Aug, 7, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bargain bag sale begins on Saturday at 3 p.m.

August is full of birthdays in the MacDonald household. Tommy turned 18 on Aug. 3, and Jaimie will celebrate her 24th on Aug 7.
NJROTC Leadership Academy in Newport, R.I., designed to prepare cadets for potential leadership positions, is physically, emotionally and mentally demanding, but is an experience participants will never forget. The cadets sailed daily on Narragansett Bay and attended 22 classes on topics like bias and prejudice, integrity, physical and mental fitness, dealing with seniors and subordinates, decision making, and more. Days began at 5 a.m. and ended at 9 p.m. and cell phone use was allowed only on Saturday. Kudos to Green Cadet Aide Kim Krupski and Blue Cadet Aide Billy Goggins. Congratulations also to Tracy Grim’s Gray Platoon for winning first-place Honor Platoon and Kim’s Green Machine Platoon for placing second.
The following cadets received the coveted Silver Cord: Keri Hands, honor graduate and 1st Squad Leader for graduation; Matt Ireland, sailing honor graduate; Brian Cassidy, third-place medal in the Regatta Final; Melissa Milowski, 1st Squad Leader for graduation; Alison Mickaliger; Katherine Bertschi; and Landon Doroski. Finally, the “sailing guru” of Area 4 was Tracy Grim. Way to go cadets! Special thanks to Maureen Dacimo and Jean Mahoney, who were, respectively, the Gray and Blue “platoon moms.”
Mark your calendar for an enjoyable and memorable family-oriented summer evening under the stars. Saturday, Aug. 14, combines a celebration of the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council’s 50th birthday with the annual Douglas Moore Memorial Concert on the Village Green. More information to come.
