Free cat spay/neuter clinic
SAVES will sponsor a free spay/neuter clinic for cats on Saturday, Aug. 28 at PETCO in Riverhead. Distemper and rabies shots and optional ear-notching will also be available. Services will be delivered by Helping Paw Inc. of Commack in its mobile van. Cats are to be dropped off in the morning for afternoon pickup.
Space is limited; a $25 deposit, to be refunded when you arrive, is required to hold a spot. Call 722-0015 to reserve.
ABTF to hold diversity picnic
It’s all about bringing people from all racial, ethnic, religious and social backgrounds together, said Jeanne Marie Merkel, a member of Southold’s Anti-Bias Task Force, about the upcoming first-ever Community Picnic to Celebrate Diversity at Strawberry Fields in Mattituck. The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
It will be an afternoon of music and dance and special events for children, Ms. Merkel said.
Musical performers include Jus B Cuz, Jay Loomis, Robert Brown, Liza Coppola, Heather Domino and Kate and Lindsay Garthe.
The Unity Baptist Praise Dancers will also perform.
Members of the Saffron United Pipe Band and Irish Stepdancers and the U.S. Military Joint Service Mystic Highland Pipe Band and Color Guard will also participate.
Hot dogs, hamburgers and beverages will be provided.
The event is free and will be held rain or shine. The group has a large tent in case of rain, Ms. Merkel said.

Swimmers benefit CAST
Swimming a total of 8,730 laps last week at Matt-a-Mar Marina pool, Mattituck, 69 members of the North Fork Swim Club raised $650 for CAST. The money came from pledges made to the swimmers .
The annual swim-a-thon has raised funds for various charities over the years, as well as money to support club activities.
Orient water workshop
An educational session entitled “Everything you want to know about our water” will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. at Poquatuck Hall on Village Lane in Orient. There will be speakers, discussion and hands-on lessons in testing and filtering well water. Light refreshments will be served.
Be a day care provider
The Little Flower Day Care Network is recruiting individuals 18 and older who are interested in becoming state-registered child day care providers.

Sailor Kids need boats
North Fork Women’s Resource Center is seeking donations of boats to be used in its Sailor Kids program for underprivileged children. Donations of appliances, bikes, furniture and vehicles are also welcome for the center’s Riverhead thrift shop.

A whale of a drive
The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation has launched its summer adoption drive, hoping to get 500 rescued seals, whales, dolphins or sea turtles adopted this season. Adoption packages, available for $30 or $40, include photos and bios of your animal, an official adoption certificates and more. You can also enter a drawing, online or at Atlantis Marine World, to win a “super adoption” package. Kids up to age 10 can enter a weekly coloring contest at the rescue center. Donate school supplies
As a new academic year approaches, Community Action of Southold Town has launched its annual school supply campaign. Donations of three- and five-subject spiral notebooks, composition books, backpacks, washable colored Sharpie pens, tape, sticky notes and one-, two- and three-inch ring binders are needed. Items can be dropped at local banks and at Colonial Drugs, Century 21 Albertson Real Estate or CAST headquarters at 311 Front St., all in Greenport.
Fall at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck
Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in Center Moriches is now a year-round respite destination for children with disabilities.
Children up to age 21 can spend weekends there this fall and participate in activities including baking, arts and crafts, games and movies. Each session will have a unique theme and be limited to 14 campers, who will be supervised by five counselors.
Fall dates are Sept. 17-19, Oct. 8-10, Nov. 19-21 and Dec. 17-19. The cost is $350 per camper per session. Call 878-1070 or visit camppaquatuck.com.
Artists: Apply for SOS grants
Local artists can apply for Strategic Opportunity Stipend grants ranging from $200 to $1,500, offered through the New York Foundation for the Arts and the East End Arts Council. The grants are designed to enable artists outside New York City to take advantage of opportunities that can significantly benefit their work or career development.
Artists working in all visual media, as well as musicians, performers and writers, may apply for grants to support third-party opportunities that will occur between Nov. 1, 2010, and May 21, 2011.
All applications are due at the EEAC office in Riverhead by 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24.
