The baseball field at Cochran Park in Peconic, home of the North Fork Ospreys summer collegiate league team, now has a flagpole on which to fly Old Glory, thanks to the generosity of the Orlando family of Southold – Vinny (from left), Julia, Jessica and Tracy – and Don Palahnuk, owner of Northville Flagpole in Riverhead.

August is a month when beach days intermingle with back-to-school shopping and thoughts of fall. The college kids are starting to head back, some for the first time. I’ll be waiting to hear about their achievements!

A very happy anniversary to Chris and Andrea Manfredi as they celebrate 21 years of marriage today, Aug. 19.

Happy birthday to Aidan Walker, who turns 12 today, the 19th, from Mom, Dad and Liam. Liz Scharadin also celebrates today; Bill Grigonis on the 20th; Jessica Ellwood on the 21st; Donna Haase on the 22nd; and Cheryle Amara and Kathleen Helinski on the 23rd.

Belated happy birthday to Southold High School principal William Galati on Aug. 16. Birthday wishes also go out to his mother, Dorothy, on Aug. 22.

This Saturday, Aug. 21, the Southold Village Merchants and the North Fork Chamber of Commerce sponsor the Southold Village Fair. This fun event will feature sidewalk sales, live music, food, craft vendors and lots more. The rain date is Sunday, the 22nd.

I’ve been made aware of an exciting special event coming up in September. The North Fork Soldier Ride, a program within the Wounded Warriors Project, will take place Saturday, Sept. 18. To learn more about this, go to and click on “Soldier Ride.” I’ll be keeping you informed of the details as this event approaches.

Friends of the Library have generously funded many enjoyable, well-attended activities throughout the summer. Be sure to check out their upcoming autumn newsletter, which is filled with things to do for all ages.

Carol Taplin enjoyed hosting a family gathering at her home with her sisters, Lucille Koutnick of Texas, Betty Jane Gatti from Westchester and Jane Tuthill, who arrived from Fort Lauderdale with husband, David. They also had an opportunity to attend church together while remembering the birthday of Carol’s husband, Roy, who passed away earlier this summer.

The Southold Fire Department’s Hook and Ladder Company will hold its annual steak night on Saturday, Sept. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are currently on sale at Southold Pharmacy, Polywoda Beverage and the main firehouse. Fill out the raffle tickets you received in the mail a few months ago for your chance to win cash or your choice of vacations.
