Southold Police Report

This was a week marked by serious car accidents across the North Fork, including one fatality in Southold involving a young man from Jamesport. (See Page 25.)

* Two young men from Mattituck were airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after their car struck a tree on Grand Avenue in Mattituck Saturday evening. Passenger William Breimer, 17, of Raccoon Road had to be removed from the vehicle by Mattituck Heavy Rescue. Jason Rohrbach, 24, of Grand Avenue, was behind the wheel at the time of the accident, according to Southold Town Police reports.

* A teen from Peconic was airlifted to Stony Brook after a crash in Cutchogue involving four teenagers at 1 a.m. Saturday. Southold Town Police said the youths’ car flipped over twice after a passenger in the back seat reached forward to play with the radio, distracting the driver. The car, which had been heading west, overturned after swerving across the median and into the eastbound lane on Route 48. Abigail Heins, 17, was airlifted, while the other three occupants of the vehicle were treated at ELIH.

* A bicyclist from Brooklyn was airlifted to Stony Brook Friday afternoon after he was hit by a car at the intersection of Tuckers Lane and Route 25 in Southold. Police said that a driver who was turning left onto Route 25 from Tuckers Lane swerved to avoid another car that was turning left from Route 25 onto Tuckers Lane, hitting Vincent Tirolo, 67, who was bicycling near the intersection. The driver of the car was uninjured and was not charged.

* A man who had been living in Mattituck is in police custody and awaiting deportation after reportedly selling beer to a group of teenagers at Mr. Robert’s convenience store in Greenport Tuesday night. Southold Town Police said that an officer on patrol began an investigation after observing the teens leaving Mr. Robert’s with several packages of beer. Store clerk Arslan Karagoz, 39, was arrested and charged with unlawfully dealing with a child in the first degree — sale of alcohol, a misdemeanor. Police said that they learned that the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs had an active deportation warrant for Mr. Karagoz after he was transported to headquarters.

* A Manhasset woman was taken to ELIH after she hit her head when a boat piloted by her husband ran aground in Southold Saturday morning. John Picone, 64, was piloting his 76-foot sportfishing boat when it ran aground on Paradise Point. He was able to free the boat and pilot it to Greenport, where his wife, Patrice Picone, 63, was treated and taken to the hospital by the Greenport Fire Department Rescue Squad.

* Robert Guiry, 76, of Southold was injured Aug. 3 while pulling up the anchor on his boat. Mr. Guiry was able to pilot his boat to Goldsmith’s Boat Shop in Southold, where he was transported to ELIH. Police did not specify the nature of his injury.

* Terri Beth Palmer Freudenberg, 49, of Riverhead was arrested for DWAI-drugs by Southold Town Police just after noon on Aug. 5, after police said they saw her run a red light on Route 48 at the intersection with Cox Lane in Cutchogue. After she had reportedly failed several field sobriety tests, Ms. Freudenberg stated that she had taken prescription medications earlier that day, police said.

* Thomas Hansen, 40, was arrested for DWI just after 11 p.m. on Aug. 3, after police said he failed to yield when exiting a business on Route 48 in Southold. He was held overnight for arraignment.

* A convenience store in Greenport reported that a woman had put four cans of malt liquor in her purse and fled the scene in a black two-door Honda Accord at 1:25 a.m. on Aug. 2. The store’s owners provided surveillance video to police that allegedly showed a 20- to 25-year-old woman with long light brown hair stealing the merchandise.

* The operators of a farm stand in Mattituck reported that someone broke into two storage sheds and stole the contents of five cash registers some time between Aug. 6 and 7. Police said that they found a safe in a nearby farm field that had also been reported missing. The safe had not been opened.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
