WORTH NOTING Good sports

The next two weekends offer you two separate chances to get some exercise and do some good by participating in events sponsored by the North Fork Environmental Council and the Jamesport Fire Department.

This Saturday, Aug. 14, cyclists take off from the Mattituck train station for the NFEC’s second annual noncompetitive “Bike What’s Left” tour, aimed at getting folks outdoors and in touch with the environment that makes the North Fork unique.

Advanced cyclists can depart at 10 a.m. on an 18-mile loop that travels to Horton Point Lighthouse and winds back to Mattituck along the bay. More casual bikers may prefer a less rugged 10-mile tour, which departs at 11 and passes through environmentally sensitive areas of Cutchogue, Mattituck and New Suffolk. Both loops include water stops and end with a free hamburger and hot dog social at Mattituck Florist on Love Lane; other refreshments will be available for purchase.

The fee is $5 for NFEC members, $10 for non-members. Rain date is Aug. 15. To register, call 298-8880.

On Sunday, Aug. 22, lace up your running shoes for Jamesport Fire Department’s annual Sound to Bay 10K fundraiser. Gather at South Jamesport Beach at 7 a.m. for a bus to the 9 a.m. start at Iron Pier Beach on the Sound. From there, the race follows a scenic route back to South Jamesport Beach.

Top male and female and top three finishers in 10 categories will win awards. Entrants can enjoy music along the route; a raffle, refreshments and awards ceremony; and use of the bay beach for the day.
