Southold-Peconic: Library expansion presentation will be held

Those who’ve been lamenting summer’s end have enjoyed some bonus days lately. Saturday night’s fireworks over Greenport Harbor (thanks, Sir Roy) added to the fun, making it seem like midsummer instead of early fall.

A public presentation on Southold Free Library’s expansion proposal will be held today, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m. in the library’s community room. A second forum will take place Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. Be sure to vote on Oct. 16 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Absentee ballots are available at Southold High School.

The Southold Historical Society has acquired a large collection of rare photographs by East Marion photographer Loren A. Rowley (1858-1918). The collection includes shots taken around East Marion, Gardiner’s Manor on Gardiners Island and Camp Wyckoff in Montauk.

Four terrific seventh-grade girls spent a few summer weekends raising money for causes important to them: Raeann Berry, Jackie Davey, Katie Hunstein and Julia Schade sold home-baked goods, coffee, lemonade and string bracelets, raising $350 to be divided between the Joy of Life and Cystic Fibrosis foundations. Great job, girls!

Belated happy birthday to Shannon Carrig on Sept. 25.

St. Patrick’s Church will have a blessing of the animals on Monday, Oct. 4, at 3:30 p.m. Bring your pets, or whatever, to the church parking lot.

Celebrating this week are Charlie Burnham today, the 30th; Jackie Jagel-O’Connor on Oct. 1; Caitlyn Flynn, Emmie Karem, Terry Rich, Sue Rogers and Mike Eckhardt, who turns 50, on the 3rd; and Kevin Erdman and Vinnie Orlando on the 4th.

Happy anniversary to Charlie and Penny Burnham, who will celebrate 46 years of marriage on Oct. 3.

John and Rose Berryman will toast 60 years together today, the 30th. Best wishes to them from their daughter Karen and their nieces and nephews.

Congratulations to Mark and Lorrie Saporita, who received the St. Agnes Medal for their dedication and service to St. Patrick parish.

Ryan Hanrahan, a Southold High School sophomore, was the youngest of 862 competitors in this summer’s Mighty Man Triathlon in the Hamptons. Ryan is also a notable athlete on the SHS cross country team, coached by Karl Himmelmann, who also competed in the triathlon.

SHS men’s soccer alumni from the 1970s to the present will be represented at this Saturday’s game at 10 a.m. at the SHS athletic field. Odd-year graduates will challenge even-year alums. Come out and support your favorite team.

Be sure to stick around for the SHS boys’ varsity soccer homecoming game against Greenport at 1 p.m.

Congratulations to Jason and Victoria (Surozenski) Mann on the arrival of their second son, Justin Matthew, on Sept. 26. Three-year old Jonathan has been waiting patiently to try out his new role as a big brother.
