Joseph P. Getches

Joseph P. Getches died at his home in Orient on July 9, 2010. He was 92 years old.

Joe was born on Sept. 16, 1917, in Newark, N.J., to Joseph and Catherine (Hagen) Getches. Joe served as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division of the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He worked for 32 years at the A&P in both Greenport and Riverhead. A lover of the outdoors, after retirement Joe worked on the Harbes Family Farm in Mattituck. He was a lifetime member of St. Agnes R.C. Parish in Greenport, a member of the American Legion for 65 years, the East Marion Fire Department for over 50 years and a proud member of the Knights of Lithuania. Joe was the husband of Hope (Nazaruk) for 54 years.

Predeceased by his daughter Michelle Getches and brother James Getches, Joe is survived by his wife, Hope; their son and daughter-in-law Mark and Christie Getches, and granddaughter, Lindsey, all from Matunuck, R.I.; and by his sister, Catherine Getches of Southold.

The family received visitors July 11 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. Funeral services were conducted July 12 at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Interment with military honors took place at St. Agnes R.C. Cemetery in Greenport, with taps performed by Colin Van Tuyl.
