Greenport

It’s Maritime Festival weekend, folks! If you haven’t done your errands by now, you’d better get busy! There won’t be a parking space within a mile or so of the village on Saturday or Sunday. But isn’t it nice to see so many others enjoying our beautiful village?

Former Greenporters Cherie and Dick Hulse are great-grandparents once again. Their granddaughter Krystyle gave birth to Cadence Lailie Ahmad on Sept. 11. The little bundle of joy in now resting comfortably at home under the watchful eye of big sister Kaitlynn.

Welcome back to some members of the GHS Class of 1957! A little birdie told me a group of them are getting together in Greenport for the Maritime Festival and even taking in the home football game Friday evening against Mount Sinai.

GHS Interact Club members will hold a car wash at the front of the school this coming Sunday, Sept. 26, between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon.

If you miss that one, the GHS cheerleading squad will hold another car wash on Saturday, Oct. 2 — same times, same place.

St. Peter’s Lutheran Church on Main Road will have a special Blessing of the Animals service on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 4 p.m. All are welcome to bring their pets. Please call 477-0662 to confirm your attendance.

On Oct. 9. St. Peter’s will host a harvest Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with live music, delicious food (clam chowder, wurst, hot dogs, chili, potato pancakes and more), a yard sale, book and plant sale and beautiful handmade crafts, homemade baked goods and basket auctions. Rain date is Sunday, Oct. 10. Call 631-477-0662.

The Greenport Fire Department Rescue Squad will hold its annual fundraising chicken dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the Soundview from noon to 8 p.m. Donations are $18 per person; takeout will be available. Tickets are available from any Rescue Squad member or at the door on the day of the event.

When Mary Charters participated in the Wounded Warrior ride last weekend, her original goal was to do five miles and raise $500. But she was so inspired that she ended up riding 28 miles and raising $800. If you’d still like to donate, you can mail a check payable to The Wounded Warrior Project to Mary at 840 Cedarfields Drive, Greenport 11944.

The happiest of birthdays this week to Bart Ruroede, Nick Mazzaferro, Jason Rudder, Bruce Land and Semar Bell on Sept. 23; Ian Ryan, Amy Finno and Donna Angevine on the 24th; my cousin Patty Hocker on the 25th; Patty’s sister Gwen Cutts and Michael Santiago on the 26th; Jordan Marshall, Anthony Chance, Barbara Klos and Dr. Micah Kaplan on the 27th; Luke Doroski, Gregory Jensen, Matthew Blasko, Greg Barkley and Christopher Manfredi on the 28th; and Damon Rallis on the 29th.

Happy 27th anniversary to Eileen and Gary Charters on Sept. 24. Aileen and Mike Reed will also celebrate on the 24th, their 16th.

Here’s hoping Jim Sage and Bob Moore are well on their way to recovery. Apparently, while they were on a golf outing in Connecticut, their cart collided with a fence. I think your bruises will heal long before your buddies let you forget about this one, guys!

Let me clarify my e-mail address once again, as people have been telling me their mail is bouncing back. It’s not [email protected]. The “L” people seem to have problems with is actually the number one, as in Lucky One in New York, or [email protected].

Have a great week, everyone. See you at the Maritime Festival!
