Joan Hand

Joan Hand of Southold died Sept. 5 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was 67.

She was born May 2, 1943, in Jamaica, N.Y., to Joseph and Lucille (McQuade) Callahan. In 1963, she graduated from the Bellevue Hospital Nursing Program in New York City.

Ms. Hand worked as a nurse at St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Smithtown and Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for a total of 21 years.

According to her family, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Family members also said she was an avid reader and enjoyed movies.

Ms. Hand is survived by her children, Eileen Meskill of Georgetown, Mass., Michael, of Wakefield, R.I., and Brian, of Dayton, Ohio; her siblings, Jerry Callahan of Redondo Beach, Calif., Mark Callahan of North Kingstown, R.I., David Callahan of Dayton, Ohio, and Mary Pat Callahan of Moriches; and eight grandchildren.

The family received visitors Sept. 10 at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. Funeral services were held Sept. 11 at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Private cremation followed.
