Curtis William Horton

Curtis William Horton of Cutchogue died Aug. 27 at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. He was 85.

Born in Greenport on May 27, 1925, to Curtis Wells and Nancy (Purdy) Horton. he served honorably with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.

He married Mary Droogan on Jan. 7, 1950.

From 1949 to 1975, Mr. Horton was a partner with Bill Midgley in the construction firm Midgley and Horton. He then became a building inspector for the Town of Southold.

He was a past chief and commissioner of the Cutchogue Fire Department and past commander of the Griswold-Terry-Glover Post 803 of the American Legion in Southold.

Predeceased by his wife and his brother, James, Mr. Horton is survived by his children, Wells, of Sherburne, N.Y., and Audrey, of Cutchogue; a sister, Nancy McGaulley of Plattsburg, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors Sept. 1 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where firematic and American Legion services were held that evening. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 2, at Cutchogue Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Bob Griffin officiating. Interment will follow at Cutchogue Cemetery.
