Fire guts garage, destroying 2 cars

A four-car garage on Point Pleasant Road in Mattituck was destroyed by fire late Wednesday morning.

The Mattituck Fire Department received a call from a neighbor at 11:18 a.m., and by the time volunteers arrived the structure was fully engulfed in flames, according to Mattituck first assistant chief Jason Haas, who was still at the scene with about 50 firefighters from four different fire departments at 12:30 p.m. The fire had been extinguished by that time.

Mr. Haas said that no one was home when the fire began and the family living in the nearby house had been out boating. He said no one was injured, but two cars inside the garage were destroyed. The fire’s origin was unknown; arson investigators have been called in.

In addition to Mattituck, firefighters from the Cutchogue, Southold and Jamesport fire departments responded.
