Greenport

Greetings from the Washington, D.C., area! Actually, Jim and I will have returned home by the time you read this, but what an extended weekend we have planned. On Friday we’re getting a private tour of the U.S. Capitol. Saturday will find us, our daughter and son-in-law, Jenn and Dan Decker, and thousands of others at the Restoring Honor Rally at the base of the Lincoln Memorial. Then, on Tuesday, we’ll get a tour of the White House. What a way to end the summer!

A reminder to all parents is that this school year is different from most. As anxious as you may be to do so, please do not send your children to school on Sept. 8, the Wednesday after Labor Day. No one will be there! This year, school begins on Monday, Sept. 13.

A couple of reminders: First, don’t forget the World Mission Craft Sale at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church this weekend. It will be held in the Parish Hall Friday, Sept. 3, 1-5 p.m.; Saturday, the 4th, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday the 5th, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Monday, the 6th, 10 a.m-2 p.m. There will be jewelry, games, home furnishings, accessories, clothing and musical instruments. Call 730-3982 for information.

The other reminder is that the GHS Class of 2000 is holding a 50/50 raffle in memory of classmate Johanna Saetta. Tickets are $20 each; the drawing will be held Saturday, Sept. 11. To purchase tickets, contact Ryane Rogers at [email protected]

The GHS All-American cheerleaders will hold a car wash prior to the start of the 2010 football season. It will take place on the school’s circular drive on Saturday, Sept. 11, 9 a.m.-noon. Freewill donations will be accepted.

Belated birthday wishes go out to Shyanna Jimenez, who celebrated on Aug. 25, and Ashley Payne on Sept. 1.

Birthday wishes for this week are being sent out to Gary Blasko, Catherine Creedon, Laura Hagan and Pamela Reed today, Sept. 2; Stephen Luhman and Caitlin Kapell, also on the 2nd; Danielle Golden on the 4th; Jason Parker, Bob Wallace, Jason Burden and Joe Cherepowich on the 5th; Warren Bondarchuk Jr., Deanna Yoskovich, Mary Speed, Mary Hewitt, Dot Wiggins, Kim Corazzini and Gabriella Garren on the 6th; Patty Hooks and Andrea Volinski on the 7th; and Colleen Heaney, Melissa Kondak and Bill Wiggins on the 8th.

Due to the upcoming holiday, we have an early deadline this week. Columns for the Sept. 9 paper are due bright and early Friday morning and I’ll be sending mine in on Thursday evening. So if you have something you’d like included, please call me now.
