Father Peter Garry, pastor of St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold, celebrated an outdoor Mass attended by more than 300 at Kenney’s Beach on Sept. 5. He was assisted by Jack (left) and Michael Rogers. The brisk breeze reportedly made it a bit difficult to hear, but no matter; as one parishioner observed, ‘The holy spirit is in the wind.’

With the early Labor Day deadline, I didn’t get a chance to mention the unbelievable turnout at the Mass at Kenney’s Beach celebrated by Father Peter Garry of St. Patrick Parish. Over 350 people gathered on a windy but otherwise beautiful Sunday morning to worship on the beach. Another outdoor Mass will be held this Saturday, Sept. 18, at 5 p.m. on church grounds to celebrate Father Peter’s installation as pastor at St. Patrick. Refreshments will follow in Osborn Hall.

Carefree days on the beach have been replaced by pencils, books, and athletic contests. Open houses will be held tonight, the 16th, at 7 p.m. for grade K-3 parents and on the 23rd for parents of students in grades 3-6. On both days, there will be a registration table for anyone interested in joining Girl Scouts.

It was a true miracle to hear Southold High School’s Abby Heins sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” on the school’s front steps on the first day of classes. Abby was involved in a serious car accident in August but your prayers and her determination enabled her to be there with the rest of her class.

Everyone’s invited to participate in the Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride this Saturday, Sept. 18. Riders can register that day or online at soldierride.org. If you prefer to cheer on the riders, join the Southold Village Merchants along Main Street at 9 a.m. and show your support.

Happy 15th anniversary to Freddy and Cathy Montilla, who celebrated Sept. 6.

Belated happy birthday to Kimiko Fujita on Sept. 9 and her mom, Suzanne, on the 14th.

Birthday wishes go out to Krystyna Surozenski Duffy, whose special day was Sept. 15; Scott Ofrias, who turns 21 today, the 16th; Bobby Van Mater, turning 11 on the 17th; Jeff Ellis on the 18th; Sally Farrish and Bev Weiss on the 20th; Mary Zupa on the 21st; and Sarah Sinning on the 22nd.

Special birthday wishes also go out to Eileen Jacklevic today, Sept. 16, from Jennifer and Julia.

Vallaire and Frank Tarulli have a lot to celebrate in the coming days. Vallaire’s birthday is the 18th, which is also son Glenn and daughter-in-law Jennifer’s 15th anniversary. The Tarullis’ daughter Susan will be here visiting from California, adding to the joy of these happy occasions.

In Southold Free Library’s foyer showcase is a sampling from the Whitaker collection, including two original papers written on local bygone businesses like Nellie Williams’ Country Store and old-fashioned toy torpedo firecrackers manufactured in Greenport and Southold.
