As I write this, preparations are being made for Hurricane Earl, an uninvited Labor Day weekend guest. Hopefully his stay will be brief and plans for the last official weekend of the summer will go on.

Happy anniversary to Paul and Marian Sennett, who will celebrate 50 years of marriage on Sept. 11, and Nadine and Marty Bazata, who will also celebrate an anniversary on the 11th.

Belated happy birthday to Carolyn Macchirole on Sept. 4. Phil Burns and Joe Wiederman both celebrate on the 10th; George Berry turns 50 on the 11th; Edna Terry’s special day is the 12th; and both Colette Steele and Krystyna Surozenski Duffy will cut their cakes on the 15th.

The North Fork Soldier Ride on Saturday, Sept. 18, will begin with a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. in Mitchell Park in Greenport. Riders will travel with America’s wounded warriors and follow a five-, 15- or 30-mile bicycle route traveling west on Route 25 to Mattituck. More experienced riders will be offered a 50-mile route to include East Marion and Orient. For more information on how you can become involved, go to soldierride.org or call 298-7252.

Student athletes at SHS have been hard at work preparing for the fall sports season. Choose your game — cross country, field hockey, golf, football, soccer, tennis or volleyball — and cheer the teams on. Check sectionxi.org for schedules.

Thanks to my readers for sharing your summertime happenings with me. I’m looking forward to lots more news in the gorgeous season of fall on the North Fork.
