Final hurdle cleared for Shinnecocks

The Shinnecock Indian Nation became the 565th tribe in the U.S. to receive federal recognition, tribal leaders learned Friday.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs has dismissed two challenges against the tribe’s status, clearing the way for recognition.
“I am pleased that the Bureau of Indian Affairs swiftly dismissed the baseless challenge filed by opponents to the federal recognition of the Shinnecock Indian Nation,” Congressman Tim Bishop said. “Today, the Nation’s long struggle for recognition finally comes to an end, and a new chapter opens in their long and proud history.”
Tribal leaders could not be reached for comment Friday.
The move will pave the way for the tribe to build a casino on Long Island. The Enterprise Park at Calverton and Brookhaven Calabro Airport have been rumored as possible sites for a casino.
