Oysterponds: Celebrate Halloween

KATHARINE SCHROEDER PHOTO Rescue squad members from the Greenport and East Marion fire departments recently gathered to mark a new partnership providing Advanced Life Support services for their respective communities. In the past, Greenport volunteers were responsible for all ALS calls in East Marion. But after the East Marion department received a federal grant leading to the purchase of new equipment and three years of specialized training, that department now has ALS capability and can return the favor by assisting other communities as needed.



This Saturday at Poquatuck Hall there will be a Halloween party from 3 to 6 p.m. for Oysterponds residents of all ages. The committee — Sarah Olmstead, Janice Caufield, Kathy Caffery, Andrea King, Martha Tuthill, Cheryl Tortoriello and Priscilla Bull — has been working hard to make this a fun event. There will be pumpkin carving and decorating (gut your pumpkin at home), crafts, refreshments and hayrides. The party, sponsored by Oysterponds Community Activities, is free although donations for the hall renovation project will be gladly accepted. For more info you may call Priscilla at 323-2720.
The much loved, very special Oysterponds School Halloween parade steps off on Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. from the school, The route will follow Village Lane down to Orchard Street, turn left on Orchard to Tabor and then return to the school. Bring your cameras and don’t be late. It happens fast. The news has been saying that the number one costume choice this year will be a Chilean miner. I wonder how many of those will be parading?
The youth of the Congregational church will trick or treat for Unicef during Sunday’s 10:30 service. If you are within hoofing distance of the church please have some change handy.
Then on Wednesday, Nov. 3, the community is welcomed to the monthly fellowship supper at 6:30 p.m. Bring a dish to share.
Kathy and Taz Smith are once again tucked in on Village Lane after a two-plus-week adventure that took them first to Venice, then cruising in Turkey, Greece, Italy and France. They returned to Rome to meet up with their son Craig and a friend. They had an awesome private tour of the Vatican and a one-day side trip up to Assisi. Kathy shared that even though they visited the Italian Riviera, Monaco and Monte Carlo she has yet to see a more beautiful sunset than we have at the beach on the end of Youngs Road. We’re all glad you are home safe and sound with great memories.
Welcome to Elizabeth Grace Mulligan, ninth grandchild of Ruth and Reggie Tuthill. Elizabeth arrived in the Windy City (Chicago) on Oct. 18, weighing 7 pounds, 10 ounces and measuring 20.5 inched. Her parents are Julia Tuthill Mulligan and husband, Casey. It won’t be long before she has big brothers Jack, Mark and John Casey wrapped around her little finger. That also goes for the tickled Grandma and Grandpa Tuthill, too! Congratulations to all.
Oysterponds extends its sympathy to the East Marion family of Bob Kamrowski, whose life was celebrated at a Mass of Christian Burial last Thursday. Sadly, although the family has been here for generations, Bob was taken much too young and before he could enjoy enough of the full-time Oysterponds beauty. May he rest in peace.
Another East Marioneer who slipped away without catching my attention was Sy Levine. When I read of his Oct. 3 death, the first remembrance was taking my flute to him 15 years ago; he completely overhauled it and made it purr. Of course, I could never reproduce the beautiful music that came out of it as he was testing the instrument. He was a great talent on many levels and will be missed. Oysterponds extends sympathy to his bride, Merle, and his large family and many friends.
