Cutchogue-New Suffolk: Cutchogue Fire Department volunteers reach out for fire prevention week

Members of the Cutchogue Fire Department reach out to nearly 1,200 local children each year through various fire prevention programs. During National Fire Prevention Week, volunteers visited Cutchogue East, Our Lady of Mercy and New Suffolk schools to teach safety. Students had the opportunity to interact with firefighters and EMTs in activities designed for the various age groups.
CFD members Eugen Martin and Margaret Jablonski joined firefighters from across Suffolk County at the county Fire Academy’s third annual graduation ceremony. Graduation acknowledges the completion of 107 hours of combined classroom and hands-on training that make up the Firefighter I course. Firefighters Matthew Rolle and Timothy Zuhoski also completed this program during the past year. Congratulations to all!

The Election Day scallop dinner at Cutchogue United Methodist Church, a North Fork tradition, is coming up Tuesday, Nov. 2. Reward yourself for voting with a great scallop dinner complete with delicious sides and homemade pie. To accommodate the large crowd this popular dinner draws, there will be three seatings, at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. Takeout will also be available. Tickets are $21 for adults; $9 for children under 10. Call Alice Finkle at 734-6650 for tickets and information.
Bookseller Chris Cahill doesn’t usually send personal e-mails to her Amazon customers, but when she saw I was from Cutchogue she couldn’t resist! As a small world would have it, Chris is one of Donald and Maureen Cahill’s 10 children. During the 1960s and ’70s, the Cahill kids attended local schools, Maureen directed plays at North Fork Community Theatre and Donald was on the Sacred Heart school board and Parish Council. Chris spent her high school years working at Southold Pharmacy. She and her family remain friends with Floyd and Audrey Vail, Toppy and Elsie Jones, the McCarthys, Darlene Zelinski, the Levins, Jay Jernick and others. Warm regards to all.
The New Suffolk School Enrichment Fund wants to thank the community for the great turnout at Saturday’s mum sale. Proceeds will go toward drama, after-school and summer programs.
An addendum to last week’s announcement about the fund’s cookbook fundraiser: The book costs $15.
Children’s programs at the library this week include Sing & Play Olé for ages 2-3, Friday, Oct. 22, 10:30-11:15 a.m. and Numbers and Ghostly Fun for ages 4 and 5, Monday, Oct. 25, 4:15-5 p.m. Registration requested for both programs.
Have a good week!
