Southold High students plan pilot recycling program

Students at Southold High School are planning a pilot recycling program that they hope to roll out in all three school districts in town next year.

Southold junior Anne Davey, a member of the town’s Youth Advisory Council, said she and other council members in Southold, along with the school’s environmental club, plan to collect and sort cans and water bottles, take those that can be redeemed to the beverage store in Mattituck and recycle the rest at the town landfill.

Ms. Davey asked the board Tuesday for help in expanding the program to parks and sports fields. She’d also like the town to participate in a competition among Mattituck, Greenport and Southold schools to see who can recycle the most in a given year, she said. The winning school would receive a town proclamation.
